This series highlights the opening pages of the Tanjur, one of the primary canonical scriptures in Tibetan Buddhism. The Tanjur, meaning “Translation of Treatises” in Tibetan, is a comprehensive collection of commentaries on the teachings of Buddha Shakyamuni, authored by esteemed Buddhist masters. Together with the Kangyur, which contains the Buddha’s recorded teachings, the Tanjur forms the Tibetan Buddhist Canon, holding a revered position in Buddhist tradition. As noted earlier, Yongla Gonpa preserves a xylographic print set of the Tanjur, produced from the renowned Narthang woodblocks. The opening pages (tog) of each volume are uniquely embellished with gold ink on dark blue paper and feature illustrations of the Buddha, further amplifying their sacred significance. These sacred texts are carefully preserved in Yongla Gonpa’s traditional almirah cabinets. Each volume is meticulously wrapped in multiple layers of cloth, secured between two wooden boards, and fastened with string. This meticulous preservation reflects the profound reverence and care devoted to safeguarding this spiritual treasure.
Extent: 3 volumes manuscripts.
