The Bucha Adventist Historical Archive-Museum houses a rare and extensive collection of materials documenting clandestine religious communities within the USSR, particularly during the Soviet era, as well as the diverse religious culture of the Russian Empire. It is one of the richest repositories in Ukraine—and possibly worldwide—of religious ephemera from Crimea, including samizdat, photographs, manuscripts, folk art, personal papers, and audio recordings, spanning the 17th to 20th centuries. This unique collection provides critical insights into lesser-known aspects of popular religious culture, the history of religious persecution, and the experiences of various ethnic groups in the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union. Бучанський адвентистський історичний архів-музей зберігає рідкісну й об'ємну колекцію матеріалів, що документують підпільні релігійні громади в СРСР, особливо в радянські часи, а також різноманітну релігійну культуру Російської імперії. Це одне з найбагатших сховищ релігійної спадщини адвентистів сьомого дня в Україні (включно з Кримом, де був заснований архів). Колекція містить самвидав, фотографії, рукописи, народне мистецтво, особисті документи та аудіозаписи, що охоплюють період від XVII до XX століття. Ця унікальна колекція надає цінний погляд на маловідомі аспекти популярної релігійної культури, історію релігійних переслідувань і досвід різних етнічних груп у Російській імперії та Радянському Союзі. Custodial history: This collection was established by Oleh Arutyunov in the 1990s in Simferopol, Crimea. From its inception to the present day, Arutyunov has served as the curator of the collection. It began as an archive collection of the Seventh-day Adventist communities in Crimea, Ukraine, but gradually expanded to encompass a broader spectrum of ethnic and religious minorities within Crimea, as well as those from the larger contexts of Ukraine, the Russian Empire, and the USSR. Following Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014, the archive was transferred from Simferopol to Bucha (Ukraine).
Arrangement: The labelling for all archival and museum funds in the collection was compiled by Oleg Nikolaevich Arutyunov, a clergyman and the director of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church archive-museum in Ukraine. Items are grouped by themes or subjects and categorized by the type of records, such as periodicals, books, manuscripts, samizdat, maps, liturgical objects, photographs, printing equipment, and personal items of repressed believers. Larger series are divided into sub-series. However, most of the archival items are currently stored in fruit boxes, which are inappropriate for preservation and could potentially compromise the integrity of the materials.
