The sluice was erected in the tank called Thērā-k-kaṇmāi Periyamaḍai of Thērāvūr village. The inscription is noticed on the eastern pillar of the sluice. The inscription refers to the installation of the sluice pillar and the miṇḍakappaḍai by Vīrachōḻa Aṇukkaṉ alias Kaṟkuḍi Ambalattaḍi of Koḍumbālūr during the 17th regnal year of the Chōḻa king Rājēndra Chōḻa-I corresponding to 1029 CE.
