Buddhavamsa means the families of Buddhas. After having attained enlightenment, the Buddha considered persons who were worthy to listen to his Dhamma preaching. At the time, the Buddha thought of Ascetic Alara Kalama and Ascetic Udaka Ramaputta whom once he learned from. However, a Brahma told the Buddha that both teachers had already passed away. Then the Buddha thought of pancavaggiya (the five ascetics) who used to service him during his practice. The Buddha knew that the pancavaggiya were in Isipatana Maruegadayavana near Pharanisi which is 18 yojana far. The Buddha also saw that the pancavaggiya would attain a stage of the Dhamma. Thus the Buddha went to preach Dhammacakkapavatta Sutta to them. After the discourse, all of pancavaggiya became noble ones. Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Buddhist Era (BE) 2488, a hap hao year, on the sixth day of the waxing moon of the tenth lunar month, the fourth day of the week (Wednesday), the writing was accomplished at the time of kòng ngai (between 7.30–9.00 o’clock). The initiators, Saen Mai Thit Onsi and his wife Saen Kaeo from Xiang Maen village sponsored the making of this manuscript entitled Phutthavong (Buddhavaṃsa) to dedicate the merit to Thit Pheng, Sao Pu, Sao Bem, Thit Khamphan and Sao Kham. May the results of this merit move them from a misery place to a good place, and to support the Teachings of Gotama Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May this be a condition for us to reach Nirvana.
