On one occasion, the Buddha was residing at the Jetavana monastery, the monks discussed the matter of Venerable Devadatta trying to harm the Buddha. Then the Buddha said that Devadatta is not only trying to harm him in this life, he had already done in the past. The Buddha related the story of his previous life. Once, King Sirimiddhi ruled the kingdom of Pura, he had a daughter named Kaeochanthavadi. At the time, Devadatta was born as an advisor to the king, named Kiccasena. When the Bodhisattva was in the womb of Princess Kaeochanthavadi without a father. Kiccasena proposed to the king that having a child without a partner is against the customs of the city. In the future, the city will have disasters. When the king heard that he agreed with. So he put the pregnant princess on a raft and floated away. Later on, the king invited the royal priests to see the fate of his grandson whom he had ordered to be taken to water. The priests said, the king’s grandson is blessed. He is the Bodhisatta and is still alive. When the king knew that, he then ordered to bring his nephew with the mother back to the city and gave him the royal crown to be the ruler of Pura with the name Surinda Jambu.
