Aims and objectives
This project adds to and enriches the digitisation done with an earlier grant (EAP656), dealing with the legacy of the Ugandan chief and author Ham Mukasa (ca. 1870-1956). Mukasa held a central position within the elite of Buganda when the colonisation of Uganda was established. He was close to the Kabaka, a loyal chief, but also a self-educated critical thinker and author. This project will digitise the documents in the family collection that were beyond the scope of EAP656, and will enrich the metadata of the files produced by the initial grant.
The material is endangered due to climatological conditions, neglect related to lack of awareness and expertise, and, increasingly and rather devastatingly, the lack of access to contextual information that dies with with the passing of family members and other elders.
