Recalling a translocal past: digitising Mon palm leaf manuscripts of Thailand, part 3 (EAP1668)

Aims and objectives

Building on EAP1432, this project continues photographing the collections of Mon palm-leaf manuscripts and folding paper books kept at Thai Mon temples in Central Thailand, but have remained unread and neglected for decades. The Mon tradition extends across Burma and Thailand, and for centuries was central to Southeast Asian history and Buddhism. This project begins to reconnect the Mon community within and across the two countries. Digitisation and outreach aim to bring more key works of literature, medical treatment, history, horoscopology and Buddhist philosophy available to the widest segment of the Mon community, in addition to providing an invaluable resource to scholars of the region.
