Digitisation of Greek-Armenian memory materials (newspapers, photographs, memory objects, etc) from the Ottoman Empire to Greece (EAP1606)

Aims and objectives

EAP1606 will digitise historic and endangered Armenian newspapers, old books, photographs, memory objects, letters, registers, unpublished memoirs and audio recordings. This vast collection is currently stored with Greek-Armenian family houses and community institutions throughout Greece (in Athens, Thessaloniki, Komotini, Xanthi, Alexandroupoli, Kavala, Orestias and Heraklion). Dating from the 17th to 20th century, these manuscripts are in danger of being lost or damaged through improper storage conditions and neglect.

The material covers multiple historical periods:

  • The Ottoman Empire (family microhistories, genocide and deportation)
  • Refugee situation in Greece (life in refugee camps)
  • The Interwar period
  • Nazi Germany’s occupation of Greece (the participation of Armenian refugees in the resistance)
