Santo Domingo Convent Library Special Collection (EAP1625)

Aims and objectives

The Santo Domingo Convent Library Special Collection is composed of two hundred books bound in flexible parchment, folio and quarto size dating from the 16th to the 18th century. Written in Latin and other languages, these books also contain engravings, maps and double ink printing. This material is not available in other libraries; some books contain unique annotations including marginalia and other notes, signatures and dedications. This material reveals the extent of the Peruvian printed culture and the first religious order that arrived in Peru. Among the main works are an illustrated 16th century edition of The Divine Comedy and the first edition of La Cristiada (1607), written by Fray Diego de Hojeda with a dedication to the viceroy of Peru at the time, Marquis of Montesclaros.
