Digitisation of manuscript records of the first section of the documentary fund of the San Francisco de Lima archive (EAP1487)

Aims and objectives

The objective of the EAP1487 project was to digitise the most important documentary collection of the San Francisco de Lima Archive, namely, the First Section, which contains 47 handwritten books (with printed documentation) distributed in 41 Registry books and 6 Novice books. The objectives derived from this work were to rescue the documentation so that the digital archives allow its conservation over time and, above all, its dissemination. Likewise, we have achieved, for the first time, thanks to the elaboration of the precise metadata contained for each book, a complete and thorough knowledge of the contents of the books, so that we are more aware of their value and impact for future research.

Outcomes

We have managed to completely digitise 47 handwritten books contained in the First Section of the ASFL, with a total of 63,872 high-quality images in TIFF format. The First Section constitutes the oldest and most valuable information preserved in the San Francisco de Lima Archives. It is made up of two documentary subgroups: the Registration Books and the Novice Books. This documentation is extremely important to understand the presence and actions of the Franciscan Order since its arrival in these regions in the 16th century, its interaction with the native populations, as well as the entire evangelization process carried out by the Franciscan Order in American territory.
