On one occasion, while the Buddha was residing at the Nigrodharama monastery in Kapilavatthu spoke about his perfection of morality to his disciples. Once, King Phommathat ruled the kingdom of Varanasi, there was a rich man who had 18 Kotis of wealth. At that time, the Bodhisattva was born as Nu phüak (a while mouse) called Dhamapālamusika with an appearance as white as a conch and soft hair like cotton wool. The mouse liked to listen to the Dharma and observe the precepts regularly. The rich man also liked to play with the mouse while it was practicing his morality. Sometimes, the rich man touched the head of the mouse. The mouse took into account that today the millionaire comes to play with me and he would destroy my moral conduct, which is not worthy and is a great sin. Because of this, the mouse decided to tell the rich man not to play with it while observing its precepts, he would be sinful. When the rich man heard it, he got angry, so he caught the mouse and killed it. Colophon: Folio 11 on the recto side: In Sangkatrasa one hundred and 9109 (corresponding with CS 1199), a poek sai year, on the fifth day of the waxing moon of the eighth lunar month, a poek si day, the writing was accomplished at the time of thae kai thiang van (between 9.00–10.30 o’clock), the second day of the week (Monday). Mòm (Monk) Sa had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript [entitled] Nuphueak (Chronicle of a white rat) to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. Nibbāna paccayo hotu (May this be a condition to reach Nibbāna). May the results of this merit support my parent, siblings, aunt and uncle. May I reach the three states of happiness with Nirvana as the ultimate goal. May our wishes and desires come true.
