On one occasion, while the Buddha was dwelling in the Jetavanna Monastery in Savatthi, the Buddha delivered a sermon to King Pasenadi who approached him and asked him about the merit derived from making the stair cases. The Buddha related one of his previous existences. In the time of Poranagotama Buddha, the Bodhisatta was born as King Sangkharachak. He led the people to build one hundred castles and one hundred stair cases and offered them to the Sangha leading by the Poranagotama Buddha. Due to the results of offering the castles and stair cases, after death he was reborn as Indra in Tavatimsa heaven. After the heaven, he was reborn in the human world again and became a mighty king who was the great on the four continents with two thousand small continents.
