Custodial history: The " mortuorias" series refers to inheritance proceedings which were mostly carried out by the Ordinary Courts and the Courts of the Governorship, which was founded in the year 1569. The "mortuorias" were deposited in the courts while the judicial proceedings were in progress. Once the judicial trial was over, the "mortuoria" was transferred to the official archive of the governor's office, called "Archivo Administrativo de la Gobernación". In 1956, the Archivo Histórico de Antioquia (AHA) was created as the official institution of the Colombian state to house the historical documents produced since colonial times by the governorship of Antioquia. At that time, administrative documents were divided from those considered historical. The mortuorias were considered historical documents and therefore became part of the AHA collection.

Arrangement: Mortuorias is one classification within the archive. Mortuorias were bound in volumes alphabetically by surname of testator in the nineteenth century. We have digitised all mortuorias dating from prior to 1750.
