Collection of estate settlement/inheritance proceedings (Mortuorias) & notarial protocols (Escribanos).
Custodial history: The "fondo" (collection) "escribanos" refers to the public records of business transactions that were carried out in the city of Medellín, before the public notary who attested to the legitimacy of the transaction. The "Escribanos" collection began at the same time as the foundation of the city "Villa de Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria de Medellín" in 1675. The public deeds were kept in the archives of the "escribanía" ( scrivener's office). Subsequently, the scrivener's offices changed their name to notary public's offices. In 1956 the "Archivo Histórico de Antioquia" (AHA) was created as the official institution of the Colombian state to house the historical documents produced since colonial times by the governorship of Antioquia. Some notaries, including the one in Medellín, transferred the historical documentation produced to the AHA, and it is for this reason that the collection of public records is housed in the AHA.
