School of Cultural Texts and Records' Collection H

This sub-fonds consists of 26 Bengali 'popular market' books digitised as part of the EAP127 project. The original material was collected by Tanusree Sen, a former member of the School of Cultural Texts and Records, from her home locality of Dhakuria in Kolkata.

The majority of these books are not dated; however, given the condition of the originals, the printing processes represented, and the subject matter, it is possible to derive a scope date of late 20th century to the early 21st century.

The collection includes subjects common to Bengli 'popular market' books or 'chapbooks' including: religious tales, rites of worship and devotional texts; stories for children; popular literature incuding ghost stories and translations of Western Popular Classics; jokes; song books and instruction manuals for music; and astrology.

The following publishers are represented in this collection: Benimadhab Sil's Library; chaturbhuj pustakalay; General Library and Press; M G Publications; Orient Library; radha pustakalay; Rajendra Library; Raju Sachdeb Publications; sajal pustakalay; Saraswati Library; Tara Library.

The material is primarily written in Bengali, althgouh Sanskrit and Hindi (both written in Bengali script) occur occasionally, as does English.
