The extensive compilation known as the Collected Works of Pema Karpo, or Kuenkhyen Kabum, encompasses a diverse array of subjects, including philosophical commentaries, ritual manuals, astrological treatises, eulogies, and personal notes. The Mongar Dzong collection of Pema Karpo’s writings is a block-print version derived from the Punakha woodblock, specifically identified as the subsequent edition of the Punakha block print. The original woodblock for the Collected Works of Pema Karpo was intricately carved under the patronage of Jigme Singye, the 18th Desi of Bhutan, between 1776 and 1780. Tragically, this historically significant woodblock was destroyed in a fire. To replace it, a second woodblock was painstakingly created under the sponsorship of Choki Gyaltshen, the 20th Desi of Bhutan, between 1797 and 1803. Unfortunately, this second woodblock also met the same fate, being consumed by fire. As a result, both versions of the Punakha block prints of Pema Karpo’s collected works have become rare and invaluable treasures in Bhutan. The collection is carefully housed on traditional bookshelves within the Lama Lhakhang of the Dzong fortress. Each volume is meticulously wrapped in cloth and safeguarded between two wooden boards, securely fastened with a belt, reflecting the deep reverence and care dedicated to its preservation.
Extent: 10 volumes of manuscripts.
Arrangement: This collection is organized sequentially according to the volume numbers.
