The Jataka of Suvanna Khankhan (a golden toad). The Buddha preached a sermon to his disciples on his previous life at the Jetavana monastery in Savatthi. When the Bodhisatta was born as a toad, son of King Suthatsana and Queen Chanthapappha of Inthapattha kingdom. The reason why he was named “Suvanna Khankhak” is because when he was born as a child, he has skin and physical body like a toad. Despite his ugly appearance but Suvanna Khankhak had a lot of merit and Indra to help. He was respected by the people of the city causing the people to forget to worship Phanya Thaen. This made Phanya Thaen angry and refused to let the rains fall onto the human world. Suvanna Khankhak therefore volunteered to bring his hosts of various animals such as termites, bees, wasps, hornets, snakes, elephants, horses, cows, and buffaloes to fight with Phanya Thaen in the sky until victory. Phanya Thaen allowed the rains fall onto the world as before. Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Sangkat (CS) 1237, a hap khai year, the ninth day of the waning moon of the tenth lunar month, a poek chai day, the fifth day of the week (Thursday), the writing was accomplished at the time of kòng ngai (between 7.30–9.00 o’clock). The king who lived in the front golden palace, along with his mother and relatives sponsored the making of this manuscript [entitled] Lam suvannakhankhak, to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May our wishes and desires come true.
