Vinaya text tells the cause of laying down Pārājika. Pārājika literally means ‘defeats’ which is called Garukāpatti (heavy punishment). If a monk breaks any one of the rules he is automatically defeated in the holy life and falls from monkhood immediately. He is not allowed to become a monk again in his lifetime. Pārājika consists of four items: 1. Sexual intercourse. 2. Stealing what is not given. 3. Intentionally deprive a human being of life. 4. Without direct knowledge, claim a superior human state. The original story of the first training rule comes from Venerable Sudinna. Sudinna who was only one son of a prominent merchant in Vesālī, was ordained as a monk by the Buddha. Venerable Sudinna followed the Buddha’s teachings strictly. But he was requested by his mother to give them a child for their family, if he wants to live in monkhood for life. One day he had sexual intercourse with his former wife in the Great wood. When other monks knew, they rebuked Venerable Sudinna in various ways. Then they told the matter to the Buddha. The Buddha convened the assembly of monks and questioned Venerable Sudinna. When Venerable Sudinna confessed, the Buddha had rebuked him in various ways and laid down the first training rule for the monks. This is the beginning of laying down the training rules. Colophon: Folio 26 on the recto side: Sangkatrasa (corresponding with CS) 1184, a tao sanga year, the first day of the waning moon of the fifth lunar month, the fifth day of the week (Thursday), a hap mao day. The writing of this manuscript was accomplished at the time of the thae kai thiang (between 9.00–10.30 o’clock). Maha Somdet Uparāt Vangna (The great viceroy of the Front Palace) and his queen together with all their children had the religious faith to sponsor the making of this manuscript entitled Vinaya, to support the Teachings of the Buddha to last until the end of 5000 years. May this be a condition to reach Nibbāna.
