Madhuri (1922-47) was a major multi-purpose illustrated literary monthly that enjoyed a fairly decent run. It was launched in July 1922 by Naval Kishore Press of Lucknow, a leading publisher of multilingual books since 1858, under the editorship of Dulare Lal Bhargav. Roop Narayan Pandey, Premchand and Mirza Akbari were some of its other prominent editors. Madhuri began with an initial circulation figure of 2000, which jumped to 6000 within a year, which was a healthy lead over its contemporary monthlies in the early 1920s. It proclaimed itself as the mouthpiece of national awakening, freedom struggle and dedicated itself to the cause of propagating Hindi while taking up the challenge of enriching a still nascent language. Madhuri published all the leading writers, poets, artists, and opinion-makers of its time on a range of political, social, economic and cultural issues. Its editorials commented on global, national, and north Indian issues. The magazine invariably showcased aesthetically curated colourful paintings by the leading painters of the time, and the pictures were captioned with poetic citations by leading Hindi and Urdu poets. The magazine contained advertisement for Ayurvedic medications, hair and body oils, fortune telling, publication houses, gramophone players and records, watches, self-defense weapons, bicycles and bicycle tyres, medicines, perfumes, musical instruments, fabrics, insurance schemes, and household items like cookware, mosquito curtains and utensils.
माधुरी (1922-47) लखनऊ के मशहूर नवल किशोर प्रेस से छपने वाली बहुद्देशीय सचित्र साहित्यिक पत्रिका थी, जो अच्छी-ख़ासी लोकप्रिय रही। इसके संपादकों में दुलारेलाल भार्गव, रूपनारायण पांडेय, प्रेमचंद और मिर्ज़ा अकबरी ख़ास रहे। तक़रीबन 2000 की प्रसार-संख्या से शुरू होकर एक ही साल में इसने 6000 का आँकड़ा पार कर लिया, जो उस समय के हिसाब से अच्छा था। माधुरी स्वतंत्रता संघर्ष, भारतीय राष्ट्रवाद और हिन्दी राष्ट्रवाद की पैरोकार बनकर उभरी, जिसके तहत इस उभरती भाषा के कई इलाक़ों और विधाओं में सामग्री छापने का काम इसने किया। इसने अपने समय के तमाम अग्रणी लेखकों, कवियों, कलाकारों और चिंतकों की वैश्विक, राष्ट्रीय और उत्तर भारत के स्थानीय मुद्दों पर लिखी रचनाओं को स्थान दिया। माधुरी के आवरण पर तथा अंदर के पन्नों में उस समय के चित्रकारों के चुनिंदा रंगीन चित्र भी हिन्दी-उर्दू कवियों के सम्यक उद्धरणों के साथ छपते थे। पत्रिका में आयुर्वेदिक दवाओं, इत्र तथा तेलों, भविष्यवक्ताओं, सायकिल के टायर, ग्रामोफ़ोन मशीनों और तवों, घड़ियों, हारमोनियम-जैसे वाद्य-यंत्रों, बीमा योजनाओं, और रसोई के बर्तन से लेकर पर्दे व मच्छरदानी-जैसी घरेलू इस्तेमाल की चीज़ों के विज्ञापन छपते थे।.
