Digitisation of Legislative Council of Nyasaland Records (EAP1608)

Aims and objectives

EAP1608 seeks to digitise and preserve the Nyasaland Legislative Council records that are in danger of being damaged. These records are currently housed in the old colonial legislative council building in Zomba, the southern region of Malawi, and in the Parliamentary Chamber in Lilongwe, the central region of Malawi. The project focuses on surveying of the records, transferring them to a safer place, developing an inventory and digitising the documents. Digitisation is essential because the age, physical condition and format of the records put them at risk of deterioration. Currently, the places and environments they are stored in right now also compromise the records' security and maintenance. These records have both research and historical value because they contain unique information about the society dynamics and how the colonial government conducted its policies and daily businesses.
