Digitisation, preservation and dissemination of the historical archive in the Monastery of Agustinas, Santiago de Chile (EAP1596)

Aims and objectives

The oldest female convent in Santiago de Chile, the Monastery of Agustinas of Santiago, had been active for more than four centuries (1574-2023). Founded in the 16th century during the conquest of America by the Spanish monarchy, the monastery was only recently closed following the death of its last nuns. EAP1596 aims to preserve and digitise this monastery’s historical archive, particularly the hundred volumes corresponding to the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries. Some of its valuable contents refer to: founding acts, rules and constitutions, accounts, professions, pastoral visits, autobiographies, necrologies, chronicles, chaplaincies, censuses, donations, official correspondence, properties, pious practices, inventories, maps and plans, among others.
