Amazonian Journalism in Times of Extractivism: the newspaper archive at the Biblioteca Amazónica (BA) in Iquitos, Peru (EAP1583)

Aims and objectives

EAP1583 aims to digitise three important newspaper archives held at the Biblioteca Amazónica (BA) in Iquitos, Peru. Dating between the 1920s and 1950s, El Eco, La Razón and El Oriente were three locally-produced newspapers published during a key time of rapid industrialisation and expansion of extractive industry in the Peruvian Amazon and the Amazon River Basin more broadly. These newspapers were the main sources  of local and international news reporting, but they also provided information about local events, culture and literature. Recent scholarship documenting the ongoing digitisation projects in Peru has revealed the lack of newspapers in the broader digital archive and the dearth of digital sources from the Amazon. Digitising these invaluable historical newspapers will fill this gap.
