Stabilising and digitising 19th- and 20th-century materials now in precarious condition at the Circuit Court of Istmina, Chocó (EAP1477)

Aims and objectives

This project digitises court documents in Istmina, Colombia. These were piled into sacks for years, although our team has organised them in acid-free boxes and is pursuing a relocation plan. Many have deteriorated, but most remain legible, despite exposure to humidity, insects, and vermin. The records are relevant for histories of Black communities in Colombia. In partnership with the University of Michigan, which provided initial funds for the rescue and organisation of the archive, with Fundación Neogranadina, which has developed an open archive oriented toward a participatory history of Colombia, and with Fundación Muntú Bantú, a museum of the African Diaspora located in Chocó, our project allows a regional black community to better value its own history.
