Voices of indigenous peoples of Karelia (EAP1396)

Aims and objectives

The Audio Archive of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History KarRC RAS is the largest depository of audio recordings made from indigenous peoples of the Republic of Karelia and adjacent areas. Voice recordings were made in the 1930s–1950s from Finno-Ugrian peoples: Karelians, Vepsians, and Ingrians, and from Russians as well. These records contain all traditional folklore genres which existed among these peoples in earlier times. Currently, the original audio materials are endangered. The main purposes of the project are to digitise early audio recordings and transfer them to modern digital devices.
