Manuscripts of Ferghana Valley as a Source for the Study of History of Kokand Khanate (1710-1876) (EAP1326)

Aims and objectives

We will digitise approximately 90 manuscripts identified in the pilot study. We will also geographically, chronologically, and thematically extend the parameters of the initial investigation. This major grant will include materials from all former territories of the Kokand Khanate, which at its height extended into neighbouring Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. We will also include a survey of manuscripts from the establishment of the governorship of Russian Turkestan in the Fergana Valley, which replaced the Kokand Khanate and include manuscripts traceable to particular authors, and those bearing wakf seals of the Kokand Khanate, such as that of last ruler, Khudayar Khan (r. 1845-1858, 1865-1867).

Outcomes

This project digitised two collections, the Musa Aminov (1889–1971), who was an Islamic cleric and teacher in the madrasah. His collection shows the wealth of religious literature held by Islamic teachers of Central Asia. The project also digitised the collection of Dr Ahmadzhan Madaminov (1926–2008), a secular literary scholar. His collection contains handwritten sources on the poetry of Central Asia from the end of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century.
