Digital preservation of the endangered Armenian epigraphic heritage from India (EAP1721)

Aims and objectives

The project aims to inventory Armenian inscriptions in Madras, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Mumbai, following Endangered Archives Programme (EAP) standards and preparing them for digitisation. These inscriptions, dating from the 17th to early 20th centuries, are vital to understanding the Armenian diaspora's cultural and historical contributions in India. By documenting their physical and textual attributes, this project will create a collection of approximately 300 photographs of inscriptions, complete with descriptions. This inventory will form the foundation for future digitisation and preservation efforts, ensuring these invaluable cultural artifacts are safeguarded against environmental and urban threats. The results will be shared with local Armenian institutions and made accessible online, supporting global research in epigraphy, linguistics and cultural heritage while preserving the Armenian community's legacy in India.
