Digitisation and cataloguing of the colonial census manuscripts from the 16th to 18th centuries at the Archivo de La Paz. (EAP1600)

Aims and objectives

EAP1600 seeks to preserve and digitise historical population censuses and judicial records concerning the taxation of the indigenous population. Written in old Castilian Spanish, these Spanish colonial documents date from the 16th to the 18th century. The records contain data about the geographic space, jurisdiction and provinces of various Andean-Amazonian ethnic groups. They also reveal information about tribute payers between the ages of 18 and 50, including their personal identity details such as their names, surnames, marital status, health and the identities of their wives responsible for paying the contribution in their absence. One series of manuscript included in this collection is the "Visit of Lands by Gerónimo Luis de Cabrera (1656-1662)", documents registered in 2017 under UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme. This collection will serve as a primary source for researching indigenous populations, land ownership, community authorities and inter-ethnic relationships among Aymaras, Kallawayas, Quechuas, Urus and Spaniards.
