Aims and objectives
Around 41,000 volumes of Tibetan language materials are held in the National Library of Mongolia (NLM). From this extensive collection, EAP1490 proposed to select and preserve 500 volumes of endangered material. Written by Mongolian authors in Tibetan language between 1700 and 1900, these volumes lacked proper identification and included miscellaneous writings. Some had not been opened in hundreds of years; they had been inaccessible to the Mongolian community and have never before been accessible to the global scholarly community.
Outcomes
EAP funding contributed to the digitisation and preservation of these 500 volumes, while the U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation provided additional support for staff salaries, outreach activities and other relevant costs. The team at the NLM was comprehensively trained to carry out the work, achieving the objectives of the project. The original material remains in the National Library of Mongolia, while the digital archival copies and catalogue are stored at the Buddhist Digital Resource Centre and the Asian Legacy Library. The digital files are also backed up to the local network storage at the NLM.
Training in the basics of digitisation and cataloguing was directed by the NLM Project Manager. The NLM and the Asian Legacy Library hosted community events to educate collection holders, librarians and others affiliated with cultural institutions on the importance of digitisation and to build broader networks in the field. The project team also hosted multiple international scholars and students to communicate the importance and impact of this preservation project. In January 2023, the Project Manager Sainbileg Byambadorj was interviewed about the project on TenGerTV, the Mongolian television network.

Уг төслийн үр дүнд Монгол Улсын Үндэсний Номын сан (МУҮНС)-ын Төвөд номын цуглуулга дахь ховордсон 500 боть номууд, ялангуяа монгол зохиолчдын төвөд хэлээр бичсэн боть материалуудыг каталогжуулж, архивлаж, цахим хэлбэрт шилжүүлэв. Монгол зохиолчдын 1700-1900 оны хооронд бичсэн эдгээр 500 боть өвөрмөц бөгөөд устах аюулд орсон материалуудыг МУҮНС-д хадгалагдаж байсан 41,000 боть төвөд хэлт материалуудын томоохон цуглуулгаас эмхэтгэсэн авсан юм. Хамгийн чухал нь энэхүү төсөлд багтсан зохиолуудын ихэнх нь Монголын Буддизмтай холбоотой байгаа нь нэнчухал бөгөөд бүрэн судлагдаагүй сэдэв юм. Уг төслөөр хадгалагдаж хамгаалагдсан материалууд нь Монголын ард түмэн төдийгүй олон улсын Монголч эрдэмтэд, судлаачид, түүхчдэд нэн чухал ач холбогдолтой Монголын соёл, эрдэм шинжилгээний бүртгэл болж байна. МУҮНС-ын баг нь дижитал хадгалалт хамгаалалтын шилдэг туршлагын дагуу уг ажлыг гүйцэтгэхэд иж бүрэн бэлтгэгдсэн бөгөөд түүний үр дүнд уг төслөөр ховордсон чухал материалуудыг хамгаалах боломжтой болсон билээ.
