Time stands still: preserving the Manaki brothers' photographic legacy (EAP1470)

Aims and objectives

Our main goal was to complete digitalization and essential conservation of the photographic heritage of the Balkan's first filmmakers Yanaki and Milton Manaki. Bitola's archive possesses the complete photographic material as well as personal documentation of the Manaki family which has never undergone the process of full digitalization. The photographic material contains more than 7000 glass negatives, 3000+ roll and sheet films and more than 10000 original prints and is produced in the end of the 19th century and up until the death of Milton in 1964. The photographic collection is one of the most explored on the Balkans.

Outcomes

This project completed the digitization and basic preservation on the arranged and processed archival material and the results are: 25865 digital files, of which 6563 glass plate negatives, 1351 sheet film negatives, 10981 positive prints with 12853 digital files, 3867 original documents with 5098 digital files and we have created an extensive metadata with 6894 entries.
