Digitisation of documents from the founding of the Student Federation of Peru 1920-1921 (EAP1624)

Aims and objectives

The aim of the project was to recover and digitise valuable documentary material pertaining to the founding of the Student Federation of Peru (FEP). The digitisation of these documents will enable the dissemination of the historical activities carried out by the FEP between 1920 and 1921, in collaboration with student, civil and political organisations both nationally and internationally. The main milestone was the holding of the First National Student Congress in the city of Cusco (Peru). Despite its incomplete state, this archive has a significant historical value and is of great importance, as it reflects the relationship of the FEP with various federated university centres, trade union organisations and even with international student organisations in countries such as Argentina, Mexico and Spain. It also provides a glimpse of the issues under discussion within the student movement through its minutes, meetings and publications, as well as a glimpse of the wide network of contacts and collaborators that were established for the development of its activities.

Outcomes

In total, 515 documents of the Student Federation of Peru were digitised. These are distributed in 6 correspondence folders, 1 folder with magazines and pamphlets and 1 folder with 3 files. In total, 1,546 digital objects were generated, a figure that exceeds the amount estimated in the project application. The physical documents were cleaned before being placed in new storage, removing dust, conditioning folds in the sheets and eliminating elements that could compromise their conservation - such as metal fasteners - before being placed in new storage.

The archival material, both physical and digital, is in the custody of the José Carlos Mariátegui Archive. As part of the project, a contractual link has been established with the Documentation Centre of the National Major University of San Marcos (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos - UNMSM, Lima), which will have a digital copy of the documents in its collection.
