Aims and objectives
The library of the Great Omari Mosque is one of the most important and oldest library and archives centers in Palestine. The manuscripts the Great Omari Mosque hosts are of great rarity and importance to the cultural heritage of ancient Palestine in addition to the whole Arab world. The Library currently hosts 188 invaluable manuscripts and more than 2,274 manuscript fragments of high significance. The Gaza strip is one of the most troubled areas in the world due to the political conflict with Israel, and this what makes the collection of manuscripts and other cultural heritage materials at constantly high risk. The vulnerability of such highly important manuscript in such a conflict environment, urged us to intervene and protect the content through digitizing all the manuscripts and place them in multiple safe places, while we provide first aid to the physical manuscripts. The project has significantly helped in in protecting manuscripts through digitizing and providing suitable storage conditions. Local staff had been trained by Hill Museum and Manuscript Library’s specialists to digitize and handle the manuscripts, which will hopefully set the capacity foundation for similar future projects.
Outcomes
By the completion of the project, 211 manuscripts, contain over 34,000 pages and over 2,500 manuscript fragments have been digitized through HMML standard digitization environment with high quality, all of which where digitized in RAW, JPEG and TIFF formats. Prior to digitization, all manuscripts and fragments have been physically checked and preserved through basic “first aid” process. The team were trained prior to the EAP project start and they utilized their experience and knowledge in protecting and preserving the physical wellbeing of the manuscripts. In addition, all manuscripts have been catalogued and the content were recorded in an agreed upon form. Un-catalogued manuscripts and fragments had been identified, classified, and catalogued. Most fragments have been merged to to relevant catalogued manuscripts based on type of paper, handwriting style, and other categorizations.
تعد مكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير من أهم وأعرق المكتبات الوطنية والارشيفات في فلسطين. ومع ذلك ، فإن المكتبة معرضة للخطر بسبب الافتقار إلى أساليب الحفاظ المناسبة، بالإضافة إلى تأثير الصراعات في المنطقة والغارات الجوية. سيساعد المشروع في حماية المخطوطات من خلال رقمنتها وتوفير ظروف تخزين مناسبة. تم تدريب الموظفين المحليين من قبل المتخصصين في متحف هيل ومكتبة المخطوطات لرقمنة المخطوطات والتعامل معها.
أمر القائد المملوكي الشهير الملك الظاهر ركن الدين بيبرس البندقداري في القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي بإنشاء مكتبة الجامع العمري الكبير بمدينة غزة، حيث احتوت المكتبة عشرون ألف مخطوطة في ذلك الوقت. ومنذ نشأة المكتبة، عانت مدينة غزة من الحروب والنزاعات التي أدت إلى تخريبها ونهبها، حيث تعرضت المكتبة إلى التخريب والنهب خلال الحملة الفرنسية على فلسطين، وخلال الحرب العالمية الأولى وبعد الاحتلال الإسرائيلي المباشر لمدينة غزة. هذا بجانب الضرر البالغ الذي حدث بعد أربع حروب مدمرة تعرضت لها غزة القرن الوحد والعشرون، إضافة إلى حصار مدينة غزة الخانق الذي أدى ومازال إلى ظروف اقتصادية صعبة ألقت بظلالها السلبية على بيئة الحفظ والتخزين لهذه المخطوطات ذات القيمة العالية.
أطلقت الكلية الجامعية للعلوم التطبيقية مشروع الرقمنة والتدخل العاجل لحفظ التراث الوثائقي للمكتبة وذلك من أجل تحقيق الأهداف التالية:
- بناء قدرات العاملين في مجال التراث الوثائقي ، حيث تناول التدريب المواضيع التالية الإدارة والحفاظ على التراث الوثائقي بالإضافة إلى رقمنة المخطوطات.
- التدخل العاجل لإنقاذ المخطوطات.
- الرقمنة والمسح الضوئي للمخطوطات.
- تحسين ظروف تخزين وأرشفة المخطوطات.
- نشر مخرجات المشروع وزيادة الوعي المجتمعي
تعتبر كل مخطوطة في هذه المكتبة ذات قيمة عالية، فهي فريدة من نوعها بشكل أو بآخر مهما كان حجمها صغيراً. و يزيد من أهمية هذه المجموعة أنها توثق للحقبات التاريخية والتقنيات اليدوية التي صنعت البنية الفيزيائية للمخطوطات بجانب الأهمية العلمية لها، حيث أن المجموعة تضم العديد من المعارف والعلوم في شتى المجالات.
يعتبر المشروع خطوة أولى لتحقيق رؤية بعيدة المدى تسعى إلى إنشاء أول مركز متخصص لحفظ المخطوطات في قطاع غزة من أجل المساهمة في الحفاظ على التراث الثقافي الفلسطيني. بعد تاريخ طويل من النزاعات والتهديدات التي تؤثر باستمرار على التراث الفلسطيني، فإن الحفاظ على هذه المخطوطات التاريخية سيساعد في دعم الهوية الفلسطينية بشكل إيجابي في أذهان الأجيال الفلسطينية الشابة، بالإضافة إلى أثره الإيجابي على التراث الإنساني كافة.
