The churning of the Ocean ( Samudra Manthan) of Milk was an elaborate process. Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod and Vasuki, the king of serpents who abides on Siva's neck became the churning rope and the Gods and demons churned the ocean in order to obtain Amrita (the nectar of immortal life).
