Portrait of Mary Winchester [25 Dec 1912]

This portrait of Mary Winchester (known then in Lushai Hills as Zolutii, or 'She who has entered the Lushai Tribe or Country') was, according to custodian Pu Lalhruaitluanga Ralte, given to Pu Dara on his visit to Britain in 1912. The reverse contains a message from Zoluti to Pu R. Dara. [Mary Winchester history here. Had Mizo raids and kidnappings not plagued the nineteenth-century British economic interests in Assam, it is likely the eye of the British military would never have wandered so far as the isolated Lushai Hills District. Looms large in Mizo historical memory.]. Mary Winchester's painted portrait is also featured in Mizoram's State Museum in Aizawl.

One photographic portrait, measuring 125mm x 175mm.

Good condition.
