Pha Khamchan Virachitta Maha Thela, Abbot of Vat Saen Sukharam sits under the tree which is called Ruggamula in Pali, a kind of Dhudangha practice (the thirteen practices of ascetic monk) during a practice of Parivassakam (annual ritual retreat of purification) at Vat Pa Phon Phao, at the age of 77. There is a handwritten message of Pha Khamchan on the verso of this photograph "This photograph was taken at the time of medidating in the forest at Vat Pa Phon Phao. Today is the day of a practice of lacking of sleep, I don't sleep all the day and night on December 6, 1997 and I have left from the forest and return to my temple on December 7, 1997. I have practiced Parivassakam for 18 days. For you for being auspiciouse. Pha Khamchan. December 12, 1997". Chromogenic print.
