The monk sprinkling water ceremonyThis monk sprinkling water ceremony of Sathouyai Mao Manivangso,the abbot of Wat Xiengthong,Luangprabang.The monk sprinkling water means to promote position for monks.In formertime when the monks who had sprinkled water for the first time was called Phra Somdej,for the second time was called Phra Ja,for the third time was called Phra Ku etc.In the present day when the monks who had sprinkled water from monk or Chao Mom to be higher monk or Sathou,and he is called Sathou forever.The word Sathouyai is called by the Buddhists for the monk who has been being the monk for more than 20 years and he must be the respectable monk.Sathouyai Khamchanh Virachittamahathera Wat Saen Soukharam said that:"Actually,monks can't call themselves Sathouyaibecause it is the word that people called, so he called himself Sathou Khamchanh.The word Mahatherais called for the monks who graduated from Master of Dhamma,and added to the end of their names and called Mahathera,so he called himself Sathou Khamchanh Virachittathera.
