Preservation and Digitisation of Brazilian Eclectic Architecture: Heitor de Mello Technical Office's fond. (EAP1627)

Aims and objectives

The project aims to preserve, catalogue and digitise the archives of the architectural firm of Heitor de Mello, Francisque Cuchet and Archimedes Memoria, three influential figures in Brazilian eclectic architecture from the first half of the 20th century. The fond, at risk from fire-related damage, is only partially catalogued and largely unpublished. It contains large-format documents (such as architectural plans, sections and perspectives) of crucial buildings for the modernisation of Rio de Janeiro, which was the capital of Brazil in that era. The project will be carried out at the Research and Documentation Center (NPD) of the School of Architecture and Urbanism at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (FAU UFRJ), which holds the archival fond in its custody. It will be led by a multidisciplinary team involving professors, students and hired staff. The project is expected to last for 12 months with the goal of digitising approximately 4,000 items.
