Digitisation of Peruvian satirical newspapers, 1822-1918 (EAP1601)

Aims and objectives

EAP1601 aims to digitise Peruvian newspapers and magazines dating from 1822 to 1918, which contain information on the political press, social life and local customs. With illustrations and satirical texts about the government, the clergy and society, these newspapers are a valuable primary source for studying the evolution of political discourse, the power dynamics in Peruvian society and the role of satire shaping public opinion. Housed in the Special Collections Area of the Library System at PUCP, these documents offer rich visual content such as cartoons, illustrations, and advertisements, giving insight into the visual culture of the period. This material is at risk of deterioration due to the condition of the paper. It disintegrates and becomes vulnerable with use, making the newspapers no longer accessible for use as they break during handling.
