Upper Axim Traditional Council Archive

The collection consists in 298 files and volumes of varying sizes, sorted in 6 series. The collection includes a heterogeneous corpus of records: documents regarding land rights and boundaries, lists of chiefs and acts, maps, court proceedings and judgements in civil, land and criminal remedies, as well as the financial administration of the Council. The documents span from the end of the 19th Century to the 2000s. The collection refers to the Upper Axim Traditional Area. The collection has been kept by the Head of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council, the Paramount Chief, since the time of its constitution. The collection is located in a dedicated room in the Palace of the Paramount Chief of the Upper Axim Traditional Area, in Axim. It uses Latin script with Nzima phonetic characters.
