Nsein Traditional Council Archive

The collection consists of 393 files and volumes of varying sizes arranged in five series. Newsletters, magazines, personal diaries and periodicals issued by the Ghana Government were gathered in Series 6, consisting in 5 archival boxes (see NTC list for details). Most of the materials are in bad condition due to improper storage facilities, mishandling and environmental factors such as moisture, rodents and insects.

The collection includes a heterogeneous corpus of records: documents regarding land rights and boundaries, lists of chiefs and acts, maps, court proceedings and judgements in civil, land and criminal remedies, as well as the financial administration of the Council. The documents span from the late 19th Century to the 2000s. The collection refers to the Nsein Area.

The collection has been kept by the Head of the Nsein Traditional Council, the Paramount Chief, since the time of its constitution. The collection is currently located in the Traditional Council Registrar's office, in Nsein. It is due to be moved to a dedicated room in the Paramount Chief's Palace for a better preservation environment.

It uses Latin script with Nzima phonetic characters.

Arrangement: Chronological order. Undated files at the end of the series.
