Eastern Nzema Traditional Council Archive: Judicial Records and Stool Affairs

The collection includes a heterogeneous corpus of records: documents regarding land rights and boundaries, lists of chiefs and acts, maps, court proceedings and judgements in civil, land and criminal remedies, as well as the financial administration of the Council. The documents span from the end of the 19th Century to the 2000s. The collection refers to the Eastern Nzema Traditional Area.

The entire collection is currently located in a dedicated room of the Omanhene's Palace in Atuabo. The Palace is the headquarters of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council.

The collection has been kept by the Head of the Eastern Nzema Traditional Council, the Paramount Chief, since the time of its constitution.

The collection consists of 188 files and volumes of varying sizes, sorted in 4 series. It has already been the target of a preservation intervention implemented under the auspices of the EAP569 project, which provided decent preservation standards to provide the long-term durability of the documents.

It uses Latin script with Nzima phonetic characters.

Arrangement: Chronological order. Undated items and copies at the end of the files.

Access to some files in this collection is restricted. Consequently, the digital images for some files are not available on the EAP website. Please contact the EAP team to request access to those.
