Registers of Liberated Africans [1808-1845]

Description: These volumes consist of lists of Africans released from slave ships by the British Royal Navy between 1808 and 1848. These were among the earliest African individuals affected by the implementation of British suppression policies following abolition in 1807. The lists include extremely rare detail of the names, ages, height and gender of the men, women and children released from illegal slave trading vessels at the Vice-Admiralty Court and Courts of Mixed Commission at Freetown. The Registers contain detailed information on the physical attributes of the individuals including scarification and other body markings. The information in the Liberated African Department is the most important source for the illegal slave trade that survives. Extent of original material: 20 volumes.
