Mouhammadou Makhtar Mbodj Collection

The collection consists of digital copies of two volumes of Wolofal (Wolof Ajami) manuscripts copied as part of the EAP 334 project. It is believed that the two volumes were written by Serigne Mbaye Diakhate between 1902 and 1956. The first volume in this collection is the original and the second is a handwritten copy of the original commissioned by Mouhammadou Makhtar Mbodj in 2004. The volumes include satirical and polemical poetry, as well as biographies, eulogies, discussions on Murid work ethics, and instructions on codes of conduct of genuine followers of Muridiyya, among others. The material provide internal insights into the teachings, beliefs, challenges and hopes of followers of Muridiyya.
