Matsieng Royal Archives- collection of records from the Office of the Paramount Chief [1912-1973]

The royal archives collection consists of historical and administrative records emanating from the office of the first paramount chief and his successors at Matsieng. This unique collection comprises various topics including correspondence between the office of the paramount chief and the principal and ward chiefs, correspondence between the paramount chief and the resident commissioner, issuing of bewys, complaints between the chiefs, complaints between chiefs and the public and resolutions.

These are records which were rescued from the offices of the principal chief of Matsieng. Included in this collection are records on bewis, chieftainship and complaints. The paramount chief was responsible for the welfare of his people, he was responsible for the executive, legislative and judicial functions. He was assisted by principal chiefs, ward chiefs, headmen and elders.

Materials are arranged chronologically.
