Periódicos satíricos peruanos (1821-1918)

Peruvian satirical newspapers from 1821 to 1918 that contain information about the political press, social life and customs through illustrations and biting texts about the government, public figures, the clergy and society. These newspapers are valuable primary sources for studying political discourse, the role of satire in the formation of public opinion and power relations in Peruvian society from the mid-19th century to the beginning of the 20th. In addition, they offer rich visual content, including caricatures, illustrations and advertisements, which provide insight into the visual culture of the time.

Periódicos satíricos peruanos de 1821 a 1918 que contienen información sobre prensa política, vida social y costumbres a través de ilustraciones y textos mordaces sobre el gobierno, personajes públicos, el clero y la sociedad. Estos periódicos son valiosas fuentes primarias para estudiar el discurso político, el rol de la sátira en la formación de la opinión pública y las relaciones de poder en la sociedad peruana desde mediados del siglo XIX hasta inicios del XX. Además, ofrecen un rico contenido visual, que incluye caricaturas, ilustraciones y anuncios, los que facilitan una perspectiva de la cultura visual de la época.

Extent: 44 titles of Peruvian satirical newspapers.

Custodial history: The origin of the collection is unknown. However, it is likely that the majority of newspapers were acquired by donation from individuals. The Newspaper Archive of the PUCP Library System was the area that was in charge of the organization, custody and putting into use of this collection. As of 2017, the Special Collections area of the PUCP Library System is the one that fulfills these functions.

Arrangement: The collection is organized under the LC (Library of Congress of the United States) classification system. The team responsible for the organization was the staff of the Central Newspaper Library.
