Minería y Familia

Daniel Varela and Angélica Agualimpia examined the documents stored in the Istmina Circuit Court Archive and selected those that are now part of the Mining and Family series. The selection criteria was guided by the specific interests of their research project, which focused on the internal family organization of Afro-descendant peasants and small miners, as well as the social conflicts associated with the exploitation of mining resources (gold and platinum). Thus, this fund collects judicial files that have to do with cases of cohabitation and marital separation of property, family inheritance, lawsuits over ownership of mines and agricultural land, and compensation claims for mining works. It also follows some of the key figures involved in these conflicts, such as the Chocó Pacífico and British Platinum and Gold Co. mining companies, local mining companies such as La Lozana, local gold and platinum dealers such as Antonio Asprilla and Rito E. Florez, public officials and lawyers such as Hermenegildo Bonilla, Cayetano Acosta and Sergio Abadía Arango, and other members of the local elite such as Pantaleón Florez from Primavera and the Lozano family from the town of Condoto.
