विश्वमित्र

Vishwamitra started off as a nationalist Hindi daily from Kolkata in 1916 and became a monthly from October 1932. Its robust run continued well after Indian Independence. Vishwamitra departed from the practice of reproducing material from English, and encouraged well rounded news coverage of social reform, politics, and economics, and of course carried literature. Its editorials were sharp, and it carried poems, paintings, and some cartoons as well. Its editors included Moolchandra Agrawal (founder editor), Hemchandra Joshi, Ilachandra Joshi, Shivdev Upadhyay Satish and Devdutt Mishra. It was an important swadeshi periodical that advocated caste and gender reforms, campaigned for ritual and religious equality of the untouchables, encouraged women to come out of purdah, and propagated an inclusive agenda for Muslims within Indian nationalism. The files of the Daily were burnt, and the Monthly is only partially available. विश्वमित्र दैनिक का प्रकाशन कोलकाता से 1916 में शुरू हुआ और सोलह सालों बाद 1932 में इसका सवरूप मासिक हो गया। आज़ादी के बाद भी इसका स्वस्थ प्रकाशन जारी रहा। विश्वमित्र ने अंग्रेज़ी अख़बारों से अनूदित सामग्री छापने की परंपरा छोड़कर समाज सुधार, राजनीति, अर्तव्यवस्था और साहित्य के क्षेत्रों में मौलिक रपटें व सामग्री छापने का रिवाज चलाया। इसका संपादकीय तेवर तीखा होता था और इसके शेष पन्नों में कविताएँ, चित्र और कुछ कार्टून छपते थे। संस्थापक-संपादक मूलचंद्र अग्रवाल के अलावा हेमचंद्र जोशी, इलाचंद्र जोशी, शिवदेव उपाध्याय सतीश और देवदत्त मिश्रा इसके ख्यातनाम संपादक हुए। स्वदेशी सुर में अपना अहम सुर मिलाने वाले इस सुधारवादी पत्र ने अछूतों की धार्मिक और महिलाओं की सामाजिक समानता की बात की, उन्हें पर्दा तोड़ने को उकसाया, और भारतीय राष्ट्रवाद की हदों में मुसलमानों को शामिल करने की मुहिम चलायी। दैनिक विश्वमित्र की फ़ाइलें आग में स्वाहा हो गईं, और मासिक की सारी प्रतियाँ नहीं मिलती हैं।.
