Traditional Mongolian Script Newspapers at Sukhbaatar District Library (1928-1935)

The target archival material is all editions of the ARDYN UNDESNII ERKH newspaper, occasionally some issues of UNEN newspaper as well printed in the traditional Mongolian script between January 1928 and December 1935. Every edition of the newspaper has 4 pages, (except for few rare editions which has 6-10 pages each) mostly B & W except some celebratory issues which were printed in blue or red.

The end of the 1920s and the first half of the 1930s in the nation’s history was full of dramatic political, economic, cultural events that shaped the country prior to the WWII. One of the striking social experiments exercised by the nation was a failed attempt to shift to Latin between 1930 and 1932. The newspaper carries all major stories of the said experiment which have not fully been studied to date locally and internationally.

The project targeted to digitise between 750-790 editions of UNEN and ARDYN ERKH newspaper (the only government and national newspapers) covering periods from January 1928 to December 1935.

Extent: 750-790 newspaper editions; 1 newspaper containing 4 pages; altogether appr. 3000-3160 pages.

Size and dimensions of original material: 47cm x 33 cm.

Condition of original material: The target material shows signs of original print fading, tear and wear.

Custodial history: The material belongs to the District Library and is accesible to readers.

Arrangement: The source material is located in the basement of the library, stacked bare on wooden shelves, packed in bundles and stitched together back in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The Sukhbaatar District Library is responsible for the arrangement.
