Satyabati Giri Collection of Popular Market Bengali Books [1902-c 2005]

This fonds consists of 69 books digitised as part of the EAP127 project. The original material dates from 1902-c 2005.

The original materials are owned and held by Satyabata Giri, who acquired them from the Nihar Press. The Nihar Press specialised in producing Oriya language books in the Bengali script, a popular-level admixture of two linguistic and cultural spheres that is essentially demotic, oral and performative in nature. The fonds also contains material written in Bengali.

Most of the books here concern religion: descriptions of Hindu Gods and Godesses, books of verse, folklore, and books describing religious festivals. A variety of other subjects are also covered including ethics, childbirth and folk music.

The majority of the collection was published by the Nihar Press, although other publishers and individuals are represented, including: bhagabanchandra sant; bikramchandra maiti; chandramohan dhal; churamani patra; karttikcandra jana; madhabchandra metya; muralidhar bera; netrananda sasmal; pachanan das; prankrishna bishal; and sarbeshwar mandal.
