Arun Ghosh Collection of Popular Market Bengali Books [c 1870-c 2005]

This fonds consists of 71 books digitised as part of the EAP127 project. The original materials date from the late 19th century through to the early 21st century (c 1870-c 2005).

Material in this fonds covers a wide range of subjects, typical of Bengali street books: popular literature including ghost stories and abridgements of classic works; guides concerning health and homeopathy; religious texts, rites and plays; books of mythology and magic; educational guides for mathematics, English, Bengali and Hindi; Islamic kissa books; Islamic instructional books; biographies; and poetry.

The original material was collected by Arun Ghosh from 2000 onwards, in Kolkata and the surrounding districts. Mr Ghosh owns and holds the original material which forms the basis for this collection.

Although the texts are primarily written in Benglai, occasional items (in whole or part) are written in English or Hindi.
