Liceo Alejandro Álvarez Jofré Collection

Custodial history: The documents have been produced by the high school based on their educational activities.

Author(s)/Creator(s): The Alejandro Álvarez Jofré Bicentennial Lyceum was founded in the city of Ovalle by Supreme Decree on July 20, 1885. Born as the “Ovalle Men's Lyceum” it is the second secondary establishment built in the Coquimbo region. Its initial orientation is related to the need to train emerging social groups in the area - public employees and medium-sized agricultural owners -, derived from the boom in nitrate in the north of the country. Between 1920 and 1944 female students joined the establishment - retaking it in 1993 - and years later a boarding school was built to receive children from the interior valleys of the area. Currently, it serves a majority vulnerable population, coming from rural peasant households, from urban employees and workers.
